Life Insurance: Why It's Important For My Family

I remember when I decided it was time for my husband and I to get life insurance. I was pregnant with our first child. Knowing that soon there would be a little person in our lives completely dependent on us for everything, was the push we needed to get into our agent's office.

When it was just my husband and myself, I didn't worry too much. We both had a little bit of California term life insurance through work that would cover immediate expenses should the worst happen. But now, with a baby on the way, we realized that having more life insurance would give us added piece of mind.

I decided to stay home with the kids after our second arrived, so it was nice to already have life insurance that wasn't attached to my employment status. Some stay at home moms may not feel they need life insurance since they aren't bringing in income. However, I know that if something were to happen to me, it would cost quite a bit of money to replace the work I do for my family. My husband would need to continue working, so full time child care would need to be paid for. More convenience foods since I wouldn't be there to plan and cook for the family and my husband wouldn't have that kind of time being a single dad.

It's not fun to think about yourself or your spouse dying. But at some point it is going to happen and I feel more secure knowing that should something happen to me, my family will not be struggling financially. They will be able to stay in their home and their neighborhood. I wouldn't want to add financial hardship on top of the emotional turmoil of loss.
